Courtney Upshaw

The highly regarded Alabama OLB Courtney Upshaw is now a Baltimore Raven, a great compliment to any team's defense and should pay dividends early.
Let's take a look at our breakdown prior to the draft:
60 Max Videostat Profile: OLB Courtney Upshaw, 6’2, 265 lbs
Positives:
Upshaw was one of the top players on the best defenses in college football. He’s the prototype OLB in a 3-4 defense. He led his team in tackles for loss with 17 and 9.5 sacks. He also forced had two fumbles. One of the top 3-4 outside linebacker prospects in the country, Upshaw has good size at 6'2'' and 265 pounds. He has been timed as fast as 4.65 in the 40-yard dash, and also has plenty of game experience, having played in 27 games as a freshman and sophomore. Upshaw has been a full-time starter and has shown he’s ready for the next level.
Negatives:
Upshaw will enter the next level with no flags of any kind and is expected to go off the board during the first round.

Ravens Draft Day #2

From Peter Schrager @ Fox Sports:

9. Ozzie the wizard: Ozzie Newsome and Eric DeCosta, the braintrust behind the Baltimore Ravens’ greatness, did what they do — they drafted tremendously on Friday night.
After trading out of the first round on Thursday, they got a first round talent in outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw with the 35th overall pick. Upshaw was as high as top 15 on some teams’ boards and was the MVP of the BCS National Championship Game. I spoke to Upshaw at Radio City on Friday night, and though he was upset that he fell to the second round, he was thrilled with his ultimate destination.
“I mean, it’s Ray LewisTerrell Suggs … It’s going to be a great experience to go and play under those guys or play with those guys,” Upshaw said. “I mean, really, I’m just at a loss of words to be actually drafted now, and I’m ready to just get back to the football part.” The Ravens lost longtime linebacker Jarret Johnson to the Chargers in free agency this offseason. Upshaw could be even better.
After the Upshaw coup, Baltimore grabbed Kelechi Osemele, a 333-pound guard who was an all-conference offensive tackle in college. Osemele provides depth, youth, and more talent to an already strong offensive line.
With its third pick of the night, Baltimore got some insurance at running back with Bernard Pierce, a do-everything back out of Temple. Three swings, three hits. It’s the Baltimore way.

Outstanding O's!

Outstanding O’s: Baltimore among the season’s surprising success stories

While most of the baseball-loving world has focused on the blistering-hot start of the neighboring Washington Nationals, the Orioles silently have put together a thoroughly impressive opening sequence. After finishing a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays—who were coming off a dominating four-game sweep in Kansas City—Baltimore is 12-7, tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the ultra-tough AL East

·         Dates to Remember:
·         Friday – Water Conservation Group Meeting @...
·         Saturday – A Wine Tasting and Tour at Costa Ventosa ("Windy Coast") winery and vineyard in Whaleyville, MD from 3-5 p.m.  The cost is $10 per person and includes an opportunity to taste their 9 wines, a tasting glass, a full glass of your favorite wine and light snacks.  Additional glasses can be purchased at the discounted price of $4 per glass.  A 10% discount will be applied to all bottle purchases.  The vineyard is located on the right side SR610 approximately 3 miles west of the intersection of SR610 and Rt. 113.  This event is sold out.
·         May 31—June 3 – The Council of Baltimore Ravens Roosts Annual Convention.  Ocean City’s longest running convention/parade celebrates its’ 46th year.  Join the fun at the Castle in the Sand and register early.  Registration forms can be had here.  This is the latest from the Council: Mel and I had a very successful meeting with the Ravens Marketing Coordinator and Community Relations Manager today.  I know many people are concerned about how the Beach Bash will impact our convention.  Although the exact times are not confirmed yet, we will have staff and player presence at the Castle on Friday evening, Saturday's parade, and again Saturday night for the volleyball and/or horseshoe finals and Awards Presentation.  The Ravens itinerary is independent of the Miller Lite and 98 Rock schedule.  The players are coming in on Friday night as they have in the past.  The players will not be participating in the pub crawls.  Some may do an interview with 98 Rock.  As for the beach events at the Clarion on Saturday afternoon, that is for Ravens fans to play against each other.  Fans will not be playing against the players.  Registration for this will soon be on the Ravens and OC web sites.  The VIP packages are what each hotel is offering to get people to stay at that hotel.  There is no registration cost for the Beach Bash or events at the Clarion.  Pub crawls will probably offer drink specials, but it is pay as you go.  The staff today assured us that they are not attempting to take over the convention.  They want to supplement it.  On numerous occasions during the meeting they asked us if there was anything else they could do for us.  When Mel and I left, we agreed that the Beach Bash will not negatively affect our convention.  Other than the fact the players will not be staying at the Castle, very little will change from what it has been the last few years.  For those who travel with kids that weekend...The Family Fun Night at Jolly Roger on Friday night will offer a substantial discount on all-inclusive ride tickets.  All you have to do is have on purple, your convention ID, or just say you are a Ravens fan!  I hope this has relieved some of the anxiety caused by the scheduling the Beach Bash the same weekend as our convention.  See you in OC, Sue.
·         Friday, June 1 – The 15th Annual Ravens Roost #44 Scholarship Golf Tournament, Ocean Pines Country Club, 9am shotgun start.  Price is $90 per golfer this year (cheap!) and includes continental breakfast and lunch, beer and soda and golfer participation gifts.  Contact Marc Grimes @ 302.222.0159 or Don McMullen @ 443.388.2941 for more details.  Go to our website for details and forms.
·         Sunday, July 15 – Ravens Roost Annual Summer Picnic @ White Horse Pavilion in Ocean Pines from 1-6pm.  Roost #44 members’ cost will be $10, guests $15 and includes a chance to win the 50/50 raffle.  Menu: Premium burgers, hot dogs, sausage, jerk chicken, assorted salads and snacks, corn on the cob, watermelon, desserts and assorted beverages.  Horseshoes.  Music by Mr. OC.  Sign up at the May or June meeting or call Tom Maly at 302-541-0780 to get on the list.
·         Saturday, December 15 – Ravens Roost #44 Christmas Party.  Details soon.
·         Roost Apparel: Maggie Miller is taking orders for the next batch of Roost #44 jerseys and has a limited number for sale on a first come/first served basis.  Also the NEW Turtle/Ox Roost 44 shirts are being ordered.  New colors, new styles!  We need 75 orders for Red Sun to do a run of these colorful shirts.  Come to the meetings and see the new gear.  Roost #44 is stylin'!
·         It’s that time of year again! Please bring wine, liquor & beer to the May 10th meeting for our basket of cheer auction item at our Scholarship Golf Tournament.
·         “We had a very disappointing response for participation in the Convention Parade – only 17 members signed up.  I'm hoping that some who did not attend the meeting will contact me to be included in the parade.  But really, 17 is hardly worth the effort required to put this together.  Let me know if you're interested.  If we don't get more, we just won't participate this year.  Thanks.”  Jo Ann

·         A man wrote a letter to a small hotel in a Midwest town he planned to visit on his vacation.  He wrote: “I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well-groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to permit me to keep him in my room with me at night?”

An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who wrote: “SIR: I've been operating this hotel for many years.  In all that time, I've never had a dog steal towels, bed clothes, silverware or pictures off the walls.  I've never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly.  And I've never had a dog run out on a hotel bill.  Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel.  And, if your dog will vouch for you, you're welcome to stay here, too.”

Now this is an Obituary...

A Celebration of the life of Michael "Flathead" Blanchard will be held on April 14th, 3 pm 8160 Rosemary St, Commerce City. Weary of reading obituaries noting someone's courageous battle with death, Mike wanted it known that he died as a result of being stubborn, refusing to follow doctors' orders and raising hell for more than six decades. He enjoyed booze, guns, cars and younger women until the day he died.

2012 Strength of Schedule

Ok, so the Ravens will have the 4th toughest schedule this coming season, based on last season's w/l records.  That's ok, because all the good teams have tough schedules...

What's that?  Patriots will have the easiest?  Green Bay second easiest?  Wait a tic...
