254 boats registered for the White Marlin Open.  The fun starts today!

OCEAN CITY -- Hundreds of anglers and thousands of spectators have patiently waited all summer long for the return of the world's largest billfish tournament, and now the time has finally come. The 39th annual White Marlin Open kicks off today and will run through Friday, with anglers vying for a piece of the projected $2 million in prize money that will be up for grabs.

What is the White Marlin Open?

Known as the world's largest billfish tournament, the White Marlin Open is the crown jewel of the summer fishing season in Ocean City. Every year, hundreds of boats from around the country come to participate in hopes of reeling in both big fish and big money.

What are they fishing for?

Anglers will be after six different types of fish: Tuna, Wahoo, dolphin, shark, Blue Marlin and of course the tournament's namesake: White Marlin. Each species of fish has minimum length and weight requirements set by the tournament officials each year.

Can I watch?

Yes, spectators are welcome to come to the Harbor Island Marina scale, located on 14th Street, and watch as vessels bring in their hauls from the day to be weighed. The scale opens at 4 p.m. today through Friday and remains open until 9:15 p.m. Interested spectators are encouraged to come early to get a good view, as the space around the scale is limited and it tends to get very crowded throughout the day.

If you are unable to make it to the scale, the tournament's website, www.whitemarlinopen.com, will have live streaming video of the action from the Harbor Island Marina.

Does it cost anything?

Not a dime. The scale viewing is free and open to the public, but there are also multiple vendors on site selling food and drinks along with jewelry and clothing.
