Ping-Pong Summer Holding Auditions

OCEAN CITY – The filming of Ping-Pong Summer in Ocean City starts in just a couple weeks and auditions for “day players” and a main female role are set for this Friday to round out the cast.

On Friday, Sept. 7, from 4-9 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Oceanfront on 66th Street and Coastal Highway, auditions will be held seeking kids and adults of all ages for small roles, known as day players, as well as Caucasian girls ages 15 to 18 to play the lead sister in the movie.

Call 504-233-0515 or email pingpongsummercasting@gmail.com to reserve a time slot.

For those who are interested in being an extra, send an email to pingpongsummerextras@gmail.com with a photo and contact information.

Ping-Pong Summer is described by producers as the original Karate Kid meets National Lampoons Vacation meets Wild Style.

It is a comedy based in the mid-1980s in Ocean City with a soundtrack and style to match. The plot follows a teenager boy vacationing in Ocean City who is obsessed with Ping-Pong and hip-hop.
Writer/Director Michael Tully first started working on the script his senior year in high school and has been working on it for the last 20 years. He is from Mt Airy, Md., and vacationed regularly with his family in Ocean City growing up.

Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon, who has starred in Dead Man Walking and Thelma and Louise, among dozens of others, has committed to the film. Other actors who have signed on are Amy Sedaris, known for her voice in Puss in Boots and Chicken Little; Judah Friedlander, who is best known for his work on NBC’s 30 Rock; and new additions are Lea Thompson, known for her lead role in Back to the Future and television series Caroline in the City, and John Hannah who starred in The Mummy and television series Spartacus.

In July, the Ocean City Mayor and City Council voted to match Worcester County’s $100,000 in funding for the movie and to channel the funds through a fund created by the Greater Ocean City Chamber of Commerce.

The Dispatch caught up Tuesday with one of the film’s producers, George Rush, who was in San Francisco and is preparing to relocate to Ocean City this week to begin production on Sept. 19, which is planned to wrap up on Oct, 26.

Rush said Ping-Pong Summer is in its pre-production stages, which involves hiring department heads and security and pinning down filming locations.

“Were basically tying up all the loose ends and making our schedule so that when we start production it will be smooth,” Rush said.

The main cast is mostly made of the younger generation and most of those parts have been filled from kids who live in Maryland. Some of the younger cast is local to Ocean City including the female lead. Those names have not been released yet as paperwork is being finished up.

“As we have been saying all along, we really want a sense of authenticity for the time of 1985 but also for the place, the Eastern Shore of Maryland,” Rush said. “I know for Mike Tully it is really important that the kids are from Maryland.”

According to Rush, filming will be taking place all over Ocean City. Locations are still being finalized but the iconic spots, such as the Boardwalk, are definite areas of where shooting will take place.

“We are trying to represent as many iconic places as possible,” he said.

Rush urged people to apply for extra positions.

“We are filming during the week in September and October but we want to make it look like busy summer time so we are certainly going to want to fill up the scenes with people,” he concluded.

    • Presidents Message Sept. 2012
Some changes are being made to the Ravens Rap show. First off, no “radio” in the title because it will be on TV only. It will be a 1 hour taped show on Wednesdays @ 7pm in the Ravens Room at the Blue Ox starting on Sept. 5th. There will be fewer breaks so as not to disrupt the conversation and flow of the show as much as in the past (and maybe give John a chance to finish his thoughts?). The stage will be moved to the entrance side of the room (where the cameras have been) so that there is no disruption from the audience walking around going to the bar and restrooms. The Hosts will include Tony Lombardi once a month, Bruce will show up on occasion, Bobby V will be making more appearances and Steve will be joining John Gehrig, and Mike Bradley more often. In addition to this group there will be occasional guests including Joel Feldman, Billy Carder, Buxy, and the Mayor. Eileen also mentioned some giveaways, including Jerseys and items “not yet confirmed”. The show is a great way to stay abreast of the ins and outs of the games and to get a feeling of what is going on behind the scenes, and hopefully, we will get a visit from our favorite NFL Team owner. And as a group we can promote our Roost and demonstrate our collective team spirit on TV. Hope to see you there!
It is time again to join the RR44 Penguin Swim Team. Maggie will have details on how to sign up and register on the AGH Penguin Swim web page at the next meeting. Last year we took 3rd place in the team fundraising division missing out on 2nd place by only a couple hundred dollars. Our goal is to take second place this year! This is a fun event and for a very worthy cause, so come out and help us raise money for your local hospital and have some fun in the process.
The Ravens are off to a pretty good start so far and I am cautiously optimistic that we will once again make it to the playoffs. Regardless of how the season plays out, I know we will have a lot of fun getting together as a group to watch the games in our Ravens Room at the Blue Ox, especially with the new TV’s!

As a reminder, if you or another member is ill, in the hospital or recovering from an operation, please call Cindy Brought @ 302-245-5673.
Go Ravens!!

Funny Poop
  • Bernie and Ted were walking down the street when they saw two street dogs mating in the park. Bernie said, "That's just great. I do it like that with my wife every night."
Ted said, "My wife is unadventurous, she only likes to do it the old fashioned way. Give me advice how you get your wife to do this, I would also like to try it with my wife."
Bernie replied, "Give your wife two shots of whiskey and she will be all ready."
The next morning they met for their morning jog and Bernie asked, "How did it go?"
Ted answered, "It was great, but it took my wife eight drinks."
Bernie asked with surprise, "Eight drinks?"
Ted replied with a sigh, "Yes. After two she was more than willing to screw that way, but it took six more to get her out on the front lawn!"

Ravens Cut Roster To 53

Keep in mind, the Ravens can still make additional moves between now and next Monday...

After months of hot practices and grueling tryouts, the Ravens have selected their 53-man roster.
It was tough, said Head Coach John Harbaugh, but he’s pleased with the results.
There were no big surprises coming out of Baltimore.
“I really, really, really, really like this football team, really appreciate these players,” Harbaugh said. “We have a group of guys that really know how to work, a group of guys that are really very united.”
The Ravens informed many players before their morning walkthrough that they had been cut, but they still had a couple decisions up in the air as of Friday afternoon.
The team did not release its final cuts until the 9 p.m. deadline.
Here is the list of players that were waived:
RB Anthony Allen, Georgia Tech
S Omar Brown, Marshall
LB Josh Bynes, Auburn
LB Nigel Carr, Alabama State
G/T Jack Cornell, Illinos
WR Dorian Graham, Syracuse
G/T Cord Howard, Georgia Tech
NT Nicholas Jean-Baptiste, Baylor
NT Ishmaa’ily Kitchen, Kent State
G Antoine McClain, Clemson
DE Terrence Moore, Nebraska
QB Curtis Painter, Purdue
WR Logan Payne, Minnesota
S Cyhl Quarles, Wake Forest
OLB Chavis Williams, Alabama
G Tony Wragge, New Mexico
The following players were placed on Injured Reserve:
TE Matt Balasavage, Temple (ankle)
RB Damien Berry, Miami (neck/shoulder)
G/C Justin Boren, Ohio State (foot)
LB Ricky Brown, Boston (head)
TE Bruce Figgins, Georgia (shoulder)
WR Tommy Streeter, Miami (foot)
With the release of Curtis Painter, the Ravens will once again go with only two quarterbacks for the third straight season. Starter Joe Flacco has yet to miss an NFL start.
Baltimore went with six receivers and held onto Tommy Streeter (injured reserve) while also keeping undrafted rookie wide receiver Deonte Thompson.
At running back, the Ravens chose undrafted rookie free agent Bobby Rainey over second-year player Anthony Allen. Damien Berry was placed on injured reserve. Rainey excelled this preseason, especially as a pass catcher and pass blocker.
Despite earlier concerns about his weight, tackle Bryant McKinnie was retained. He, Michael Oher and rookieKelechi Osemele provide three starter-quality tackles. Jah Reid (calf) and Osemele can also swing inside to guard, which enabled the Ravens to send guard/center Justin Boren to injured reserve and keep tackleRamon Harewood.
Veteran tight end Billy Bajema will be the No. 3 tight end behind Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta.
On the defensive side, Baltimore parted ways with rookie free agent Omar Brown, the man who had three turnovers in one preseason game. The Ravens could try to get him on their practice squad, which will be announced tomorrow.
Instead, Baltimore kept an extra cornerback with Danny Gorrer and Chykie Brown. Gorrer is a technically-sound veteran cover corner and Brown is a valued special teamer. Baltimore has seven cornerbacks overall, which should help as it faces 11 Pro Bowl quarterbacks this year.
The Ravens retained outside linebacker Sergio Kindle, who had a costly penalty and no tackles in the fourth and final preseason game. However, the former second-round pick has pass rush potential.
The defensive line retained seventh-round draft pick DeAngelo Tyson and defensive tackle Bryan Hall, who spent last year on the practice squad. The Ravens kept all of their draft picks, which is the norm in Baltimore.
While the 53 players kept on Friday hold the special distinction of making the team, there could still be changes. With other teams making cuts, the Ravens could look to bolster certain positions with newly-made free agents.
“All kinds of possibilities are still out there. We will just have to see how it shakes out,” Harbaugh said.
“What we will be striving for is our best 53 for now. And then – you know in this league it is very fluid – nothing is certain. Once you get past the first week, you go to the second week, and you see where we’re at.”
