Vernon Rudolph, Krispy Kreme's founder, set up shop in Salem NC where he literally spent his last dollar to rent a small storefront to open his first Krispy Kreme doughnut shop.
With ingredients "on consignment" from a local grocer, he made the first doughnuts on July 13, 1937. By year's end he had eight trucks delivering wholesale doughnuts throughout what is now called the Triad. He always cut doughnuts in the front window of the shop to generate awareness...something they do to this day. Due to customer demand he cut a window in the production room and started selling doughnuts to customers who walked in...the first retail shop was born...2 for a nickel, 25 cents a dozen.
Mmmmm...doughnuts...
