Sunday - An
Evening with Kool & The Gang, by
The Freeman Stage. Tickets
required for all patrons, including infants and toddlers. No re-entry
permitted. Seats are provided.
Kool & the
Gang have influenced the music of three generations. Thanks to songs like
"Celebration," "Cherish," "Jungle Boogie,"
"Summer Madness" and "Open Sesame," they’ve earned two
Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, nine Top
Ten Pop hits and 31 gold and platinum albums. Kool & the Gang has performed
continuously for the past 43 years, longer than any R&B group in history.
Their bulletproof funk and jazzy arrangements have also made them the most
sampled band of all time.
In 1964, Khalis Bayyan (AKA Ronald Bell) and his brother, Robert “Kool” Bell, joined Jersey City neighborhood friends Robert “Spike” Mickens, Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Ricky Westfield, GeorgeBrown, and Charles Smith to create a unique musical blend of jazz, soul and funk. At first calling themselves the Jazziacs, the band went through various names — The New Dimensions, The Soul TownBand, Kool & the Flames — before settling on their moniker. Over the next several years they solidified their musical chemistry on the rough-and-tumble East Coast music scene supporting acts like Bill Cosby, Ritchie Havens and Richard Pryor. Their self-titled 1969 debut album introduced their signature instrumental sound and fierce horn arrangements and spawned their first Billboard R&B charted single, "Kool & the Gang." Tuesday - An
Evening with Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, by
The Freeman Stage. Tickets
required for all patrons, including infants and toddlers. No re-entry
permitted. Seats are provided.
A singer,
composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music
in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the
Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and
blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring
as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or his ‘Large Band,’ Lovett’s live
performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents but
also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and
captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986,
Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers.
Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the
Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award and was named Texas
State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of
any artist working today. For more

·
I was reading an article last night about fathers
and sons, and memories came flooding back of the time I took my son out for his
first pint. Off we went to our local pub
which is only two blocks from the house.
I got him a Guinness. He didn't
like it, so I drank it. Then I got him a
Stroh's, he didn't like that either, so I drank it. It was the same with the Molson's and the
Labatt's. I thought maybe he'd like
whiskey better than beer so we tried a few of those. He didn't like that either. By the time I decided he just didn't like to
drink I could hardly push the stroller back home.
