·         Presidents Message August 2012

Well the first “Raft-Up” was a great success!  Apparently if I do not pick the dates, the weather turns out great.  The next one is scheduled for Sunday Aug. 26th and there will be one more on Sat. Sept. 22nd.  These are always a lot of fun and even if you do not have a boat, you can join us on one of our members’ boats.  There will be a sign up sheet at the Aug. meeting.

It was good to hear from Steve Pappas at our July meeting where he told us about the new TV’s he is going to add to our Ravens Meeting Room.  One of the TV’s will be a 70+ inch that will go on the wall above the window behind where the officers sit for our meetings and 2 more 40+ inch TV’s will be hung in the room as well.  These additions will make the room even a better place to watch the Ravens beat up on the Steelers!
Thanks to Steve for his continued support of our Roost and let’s keep The Blue Ox and The Original Greene Turtle in mind when we are considering places to go around town for drinks and dinner.

For those who did not attend the July meeting, a proposed By-Laws change was read and included in last month’s news letter.  It is included again in this edition.  The proposed change relates to the amount of scholarship money to be given out each year.  The current wording basically says that the Scholarship Committee has the responsibility to suggest to The Board the amounts to be awarded based on the funds raised, but it does NOT give any guidelines on the total amount available or how much reserve for the following year is reasonable.  The proposed change adds that the Committee will suggest the amounts of the INDIVIDUAL scholarships, but the TOTAL to be given out each year will be no less than 50% of whatever funds are in the Scholarship Fund on Feb 1st of the award year.  The intent is to: 1) increase the amount of the individual awards; 2) give out more of the funds collected in any given year and; 3) keep a reasonable reserve to assure that even in a bad fundraising year the scholarships can still be given.  The date of Feb. 1st was picked because that gives the Committee time to send out information to the schools detailing the amounts of the scholarships to be given.  The exact wording of the proposal is included elsewhere in this letter.  Please read it.  The proposal will be read again at the August general meeting before it is voted on by the general membership.

A Big Thanks to Tom and the Entertainment Committee for all their work to make the picnic a huge success.  Even with all the controversy regarding the $10 cost this year, MORE members attended than last year and everyone had a great time.

As a reminder, if you or another member is ill, in the hospital or recovering from an operation, please call Cindy Brought @ 302-245-5673.

Go Ravens!!

Funny Poop
·         A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the "Seven Wonders of the World."  Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes:

  1. Egypt's Great Pyramids
  2. Taj Mahal
  3. Grand Canyon
  4. Panama Canal
  5. Empire State Building
  6. St. Peter's Basilica
  7. China's Great Wall

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper.  So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list.  The girl replied, "Yes, a little.  I couldn't quite make up my mind because there were so many."

The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help."

The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the 'Seven Wonders of the World' are:

  1. To See
  2. To Hear
  3. To Touch
  4. To Taste
  5. To Feel
  6. To Laugh
  7. And to Love.

A gentle reminder -- that the most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man.
