Weekly Poop 8/9/17

Roost #44 Poop
  • From the Prez - Remember the August 10th Roost meeting switches to The Big Easy (the former Halls restaurant) on 60th St. at 7:30pm. Restaurant is open with full menu before the meeting. Very big thanks to the House Committee - Donna Chaplinski and Ron Apperson for all their work in securing the locations for the June - September Roost meetings.
As of November 1st, Jo Ann Elder is resigning as Membership Chairman. Jo Ann has handled all the duties of the Membership Committee basically by herself for years. The Roost By Laws call for a Membership Committee of 3 members. So we are looking for 3 members to step up and handle the duties and functions that Jo Ann has handled by herself. These include processing new member applications, maintaining the Roost Rooster, administering the attendance list at Roost meetings and managing dues collections. Jo Ann will be happy to assist members in learning and becoming comfortable with these functions. By dividing all these duties up by three people, I think the time needed to serve on the Membership Committee will be greatly reduced and manageable for the new Committee members. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested in stepping up. We need your help and support! And Jo Ann deserves a break (and our thanks)!
I will try to have my white, Ford 150 pick up truck in a visible spot at the Big Easy for the next meeting for members who want to bring plastic or paper grocery bags for Diakonia. Thanks, Diakonia really appreciates these donations to help give out food to needy families or individuals.
Is there interest in getting together at the Roxana Moose Lodge to watch the London game? They open at 9am in time to watch the game. Thanks for the suggestion, Nelson.

Cyberknife robotic radiation treatments for brain and c-spine first then more chemo and immunotherapy next and long term. So, I am feeling pretty good, working hard to maintain regular, new-normal schedule. The docs are very encouraging and are telling me I will be able to go to Ravens game in London and bus trips to the stadium. I ask for your prayers, support and normal usual fun. Love you all, Joanne. PS I have to admit I have an O’s shirt on today. They are hot!

  • Saturday (night) - The Joey Alexander Trio, Freeman Stage. Born on June 25, 2003 on the island of Bali, pianist Joey Alexander originally learned about jazz from his dad, who exposed his son to a variety of classic albums from his extensive collection. At the age of 6, Joey began teaching himself to play piano using a mini electronic keyboard given to him by his father. His musicianship and grasp of jazz fundamentals developed at a remarkable pace, and at age 8 UNESCO invited him to play solo piano for an elated Herbie Hancock during the piano great’s visit to Indonesia. At 9, he won the grand prize at the first Master-Jam Fest, an all-ages competition in Ukraine which included 200 competitors from 17 countries. By 10, he was performing at jazz festivals in both Jakarta and Copenhagen. An invitation from Wynton Marsalis led to his U.S. debut appearance at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall in 2014 where he amazed the audience with his musicality, followed by appearances before the Jazz Foundation of America at the Apollo and the Arthur Ashe Learning Center at Gotham Hall. Wishing to encourage the continued development of Joey’s prodigious playing, his parents sold the family business in Jakarta and relocated to the United States.
His 2015 debut album for “Motéma Music, My Favorite Things,” garnered two Grammy Award nominations for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Improvised Solo for his performance of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps,” making him the youngest jazz artist ever nominated for a Grammy. His performances on the 58th Annual Grammy Awards broadcast received standing ovations from the star-studded audience, bringing his talent to the attention of music lovers everywhere, mesmerizing long-time industry professionals, and inspiring other young musicians to pursue their own dreams.
His sophomore album “Countdown” showcased Joey’s remarkable development as a contemporary jazz bandleader and promise as a composer. Now, as he enters his teen years, Joey takes another step in charting his artistic direction with the release of “Countdown.” Building upon the swing and improvisational style that made his first project a critical and popular success, “Countdown” is a reflection of the growth and maturity of Joey Alexander as an artist, and a confident next step toward a limitless future.

Funny Poop
  • During his physical, the doctor asked the patient about his daily activity level. He described a typical day this way: 'Well, yesterday afternoon, I waded along the edge of a lake, drank eight beers, escaped from wild dogs in the heavy brush, jumped away from an aggressive rattlesnake, marched up and down several rocky hills, stood in a patch of poison ivy, crawled out of quicksand and took four leaks behind big trees.'
Inspired by the story, the doctor said, 'You must be one hell of an outdoors man!'
'NAH,' he replied, 'I'm just a shitty golfer.'
  • Jones came into the office an hour late for the third time in one week and found the boss waiting for him. "What's the story this time, Jones?" he asked sarcastically. "Let's hear a good excuse for a change."
Jones sighed, "Everything went wrong this morning, Boss. The wife decided to drive me to the station. She got ready in ten minutes, but then the drawbridge got stuck. Rather than let you down, I swam across the river — look, my suit's still damp — ran out to the airport, got a ride on Mr. Thompson's helicopter, landed on top of Radio City Music Hall, and was carried here piggyback by one of the Rockettes."
"You'll have to do better than that, Jones," said the boss, obviously disappointed. "No woman can get ready in ten minutes."
